El Pueblo – Ustinov Festival

18 12 2008

El Pueblo have just completed a gig at Ustinov’s World Music Festival 2008. It went really well, again with the whole room on their feet and the band had lots of positive feedback from the event.

El Pueblo at Ustinov World Festival

El Pueblo have just received a very positive review in Mooch magazine. The reviewer writes:

“When the 9-piece act to follow took to the stage, complete with 4-man brass outfit, the crowd knew the night had begun. El Pueblo covered funk, latin-american, soul and reggae, whilst professing to be a ’90s band with their versions of cheesy classics like Ace of Base going down well with both the student crowd and the more muso types in the audience. The band were tight and their vocalists spot-on… The highlight was the brass section that truly shone. They were together, they hit the right notes and they looked like they were having a cracking good time. El Pueblo got the place jumping and the crowd responsed three times with shouts for more.” (Ursula Billington)

Souled Out – Christmas 2008

18 12 2008

Souled Out recently played to great acclaim at Van Mildert’s Christmas Ball 2008. They had the whole room dancing, covering soul classics from Stevie Wonder’s Superstition through Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On to the Jackson 5’s I Want You Back. Many thanks to everyone involved, especially our guest vocalists who had to step in at such short notice (get well soon Mike!).

Booking enquiries to James Reevell using the details on this website. If you’re on facebook, become a fan of ‘Souled Out Durham’ (it’s worth it, honestly!!).

El Pueblo at Fishtank

16 11 2008

El Puebloelpueblo

Just got back after a great gig at Fishtank in Durham with Durham’s premier reggae band ‘El Pueblo’. Gigs coming up for Oxjam and Ustinov College so get along to one of them and have a look! The band is a nine-piece with full horn section. Definately worth a look…

TFM Cash for Kids

3 10 2008

Just finished an amazing gig for a really good cause; TFM and Magic Radio’s Cash for Kids Campaign. The evening featured a red (or pink!) carpet welcome with myself playing wandering saxophone. The entertainment featured artists such as Andy Abraham and Buck’s Fizz, and was a really successful night. Click here for more information on the Cash for Kids Charity.

Cash for Kids is the official charity of TFM Radio & Magic 1170 supporting local children of Tees Valley, North Yorkshire & County Durham who are either sick or under-privileged. The charity is now in its 13th year with the most successful campaign being the annual toy appeal ‘Cash For Kids this Christmas’ and the most recent ‘Build a Dream’. Last year they raised around £439,000.

Many thanks to TFM for providing these photos of the event!

Summer 2008

17 09 2008

Summer 2008 has included various bits and pieces ranging from a regular karaoke and DJ residency for the Open University in Durham to fundraising gigs, weddings, balls and an event for ‘The Best of Hartlepool’. I worked for the first time at Bedale Hall which turned out to be a beautiful venue, and have started to expand this website to include some of the work I have done with event management, sound design and musical direction. In August, I worked on a show in Nunthorpe to raise money for St. Mary’s Church, after successfully raising nearly £1500 last year with ‘West End Wonders’.

Christmas saxophone bookings are already coming in, so if you are looking for entertainment for a christmas ball, party or event then contact me. To get into the festive season, I will be bringing out my repertoire of sax christmas classics (watch this space for details!). October sees a return to Durham with a number of confirmed bookings (of which pictures will appear here when I can obtain them!).

As always, keep coming back to the site and I will post details and pictures when I have them. In the mean time, I am also on MySpace as a musician (www.myspace.com/jamesreevell), so add me there and spread the word. Expect to see some self-written songs that I am putting the final touches to, and some more CD quality full songs.

Fame! The Musical

1 07 2008

It all started with a hair-brained scheme, dreamed up in the depths of the Easter Holidays after everyone else in Durham had gone home – performing Fame as a full college musical in the summer, back when ‘the summer’ seemed a long way away. So, when exams finished and lots of people turned up for their first rehearsal, exactly one week before the show was about to open it brought the enormity of the task itself home to me somewhat. A first in recent times for college, the show was a full musical, with scripts and scores hired from the licensors in London and a publicity drive across the whole of Durham in an attempt to get as many people through the doors as possible.

Hopefully some of you made it to see the final production, performed in the hall from Monday 9th to Wednesday 11th June; we had decent audiences every night and it was (although exhausting to the 50 strong cast, band and crew) to be a resounding success. Many thanks to everyone who was in any way involved, came to see us on one of the nights, or even just kept me sane during the week of rehearsals! Hopefully the tradition of a summer musical can carry on within Van Mildert, and I look forward to seeing what next year has to offer!
